Step 8 - Constructing the plaster shell

The alginate has now set and some cotton wool fiber is embedded into it. You can start to construct the second layer of the mold. There is no longer a need to work fast. Indeed that step must be done carefully.

Pick up one strip of plaster bandage and dip it into the tepid water. Let drip most of the excess water back into the bucket and spread the wet strip over the alginate.

You gently tap it against the alginate so that it adheres perfectly against it, not leaving any gaps between plaster and alginate.

Repeat until you have covered the entire alginate skin. You can slightly overlap the edges of the alginate and have some of the plaster strip directly over the model skin. Each strip must slightly overlap the previous one.

You will need two to three layers of plaster bandages to construct a solid shell. Before applying the next layers, you will reinforce the edge of the mold. Wet a plaster strip but instead of laying it flat against the alginate, twist it into a strand which you apply over the outer edges of your first layer.

Once the entire area is framed by these plaster strands, you can finish applying the second and third layers, making sure to cover the reinforcing strands

Two rolls of plaster bandages should have given you enough strips to make two complete layers. If there are any left over strips, used them to reinforce the mold.

You must now wait for the plaster to set before removing the mold.
